Started a Hellfrost campaign. One of the players is a Reliqus. Early on (Lair of the Vermin Lord) and likely throughout the campaign there will be opportunities for the part to "cash in" on magic items by giving them up to the Citadel.

Would the Reliqus simply share the proceeds? My thought is that they might not take any compensation for this as it is certainly their duty to retrieve them.

I was thinking perhaps the other characters would split any reward and the Reliqus would instead obtain a short and/or long term benefit. Trying to decide if bennies and/or glory rewards would be appropriate.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Despite being a "good" organization, the Reliquary is extremely aloof and trades only with its own members. Artifacts are usually commandeered by their simple presence and force, if they are superior in numbers. You might imagine how beloved these guys are, if they make their presence known and move openly.

Unless all your heroes are members associated with the Reliquary, only those may enter the Citadel. Members often hide their devotion even to friends, because the organization doesn't like that secrets could be shared with strangers. They are a VERY secretive and paranoid bunch...

Bennies and Glory Awards are the typical benefits for good gaming and heroic deeds. So if he plays his Reliquus well, give him a benny. If he does something heroic, that can be shared with the public, he gets a few more Glory Points.

Benefits are only available to members, not even their associates. These are one-use magic items (potion, talisman), or a spell usable for the next mission, rarely something more powerful.

Payment is preferebly in favors (see the Expansion or Freebie), only a small part in hard cash. Favors are the payment of choice, that could even be traded in certain limits.

But remember: It's YOUR game! Wink

Welcome to the forum... Very Happy

The Reliquary have cash coming out of their ears, and they're not beyond giving it to people in return for relics. They have little need of so much gold (stolen from tombs). Of course, these are one-time offers. You turn them down or try to barter a higher price, and you don't get a second chance to play nice.

Thanks for the replies.

I know they will pay cash for permanent magic items. That is pretty clear.

I did not think of the Favors rules. That might be a good fit.

Seem Favors may not be much help her since he already has contacts with the organization.

I might give him a one time +1 to glory modifier on the next glory roll after.

Favors are a tradable Connection, so even for a member of an organization they have advantages. You have to establish a list of loyalties, dependencies and support contracts between your Reliquaries and their surrounding. So they may trade their Reliquary favor for an Eira favor, if they ever have the need of healing knowledge. These IOUs are as good as gold, if you ask me.

Where did the selling of this relic raise the fame of your heroes in the eyes of the general populace? I wouldn't give them the glory bonus in my game...

Well the glory bonus would be just for the Reliqus. Like he became more famous for being good at what he does (retrieving items for the Religuary. Maybe the favor would still be a good route to go since he can trade it.

Can you provide an example of the type of assitance the Reliquary might provide someone who uses connection with this organization?

Just a few:
  • Expertise and knowledge. The Citadel has the most detailed library regarding magic (theoretical, forgotten and current) anywhere in Rassilon.
  • Contacts all over Rassilon, maybe even Al-Shirkuh.
  • Simple man power, especially if you are member yourself. There are about 200 men of the Arcane Guard available.
  • Access to minor magic items, that may help you with a mission (using or trading).
  • Access to spellcasters and alchemists who can manufacture you alchemical objects, potions etc for a smaller fee then usual or have them in stock.
  • A broad expertise about ancient ruins, magical traps, etc
  • The Citadel is always a place to retreat to and resupply in dire need.
  • Access to people and organizations associated with the Reliquary and their cause.

Great ideas. My gang is heading to the Citadel as well, but what problems, favors they would need from adventurers? Ohh, and who/what is a Spellslinger?

When they can gain their trust, and if your heroes could be persuaded to follow their paranoid rules concerning relics and magic verbatim, your adventurers could be (mis-)used for a multitude of purposes...

- To spy on interesting relics in an area or in the possession of certain people.
- To be used as scapegoats if an "operation" goes wrong.
- As messengers
etc

A favor is an act they freely granted, so its basically any action they are willing to do.
