It is stated that a Hearth Knight must defeat a Hellfrost beast in single combat to become a Sword Knight or Lance Knight. This is in addition to six months in the outer Hellfrost. This creature must have a toughness ratine at least 6/10 greater than the knight. The question is regarding the Knight's toughness. Is this his base toughness before armor bonuses or is this his toughness value with armor and/or any other modifications?

Base Toughness.

And in regards to the 'single combat' requirement -- because I know my PCs are going to ask this -- what about buffs from other players?

My clanky-tanky Hearth Knight player likes to get Armor/Deflection cast on him with raises before a fight, and we just had a Rune Mage enter the game who can cast Boost Vigor....

Single combat = no buffs, no Tricks or Tests of Will from others.

Hearth Knight never knows when he'll be on his own, so he has to be able to handle matters.

Somehow I'm envisioning a troop of Shield Knights heading out with a grizzled old mentor. And arguing over who gets which beastie. Smile

... or a battle hardened veteran of numerous campaigns in the North, accompanied by his trusty pygmy mammoth and his loyal henchmen. Calling him "m'lord" all the time. Wink

Good opportunity to judge their personalities. Smile The guy who wants to go first? Overconfident -- may endanger his men's lives unnecessarily. The one who taunts the frost giant? Arrogant -- not good leader material.

Shouldn't these character traits not already be known by their superiors?

Only their immediate superiors. It's not like there are personnel records you can check when a Shield Knight is transferred to a new posting.

They don't use marching orders, don't they?

Shield Knight Bob (aka Sir Bob) gets orders to go to a different fort to replace the fallen. Off he trots. (More likely his horse trots, but Sir Bob may enjoy trotting.) He isn't given a letter of recommendation or a pyschiatric report to present to his new superior. New commander finds out Sir Bob is a poor excuse for a knight (maybe's he's lazy, arrogant, or has no respect for authority) the hard way. He then proceeds to either whip Sir Bob into shape or pass him on to another commander as soon as possible. If Sir Bob proves utterly incompetent he may be summoned to a tribunal and dismissed from service.

Pretty much this -- in the early legs of my campaign, much of the travel involved pretty boring knightly business:

- arranging for the spring supply run from Aslov to Hellfrost Keep
- road patrol in south Heligioland
- escorting a group of raw recruits to Eastwatch Fort, along with a dozen replacement warhorses
- chasing down a deserter who disappeared with one of said warhorses

Of course, all these missions were spiced up with random encounters, side quests, etc etc. In the process, the knights and their adventuring buddies have tangled with the Fey, the Reliquary, various orc tribes, a swamp dragon and his trollish worshippers, etc. etc.

They've developed quite a reputation in south Heligioland, as discoveries they made around Temujin Marsh led to the marching of a host from Hellfrost Keep. And, shortly thereafter, they were among the literal handful of survivors of the Siege of Watchgap Fort... and have just finished running off (but not killing) the major antagonists of the Heart of Winter (which I moved to Heligioland).

So, their new walking orders are to report to Icewatch Fort by the end of the summer. I need to come up with an adventure by this weekend -- right now I'm thinking that the commander of the fort will be handling them with kid gloves. Everything they've touched has turned to blood. I'm pretty sure he'll be willing to send them off to freelance in the local area rather than keeping them marching on the wall. Which means I can bring in even more campaign elements I haven't gotten to touch: the Liche Lands, the elves of Nerenel, yadda yadda. Not to mention a certain very angry one-eyed frost giant who may have a vendetta.

Any chance there is going to be another sale on Region Guides any time soon? Smile During the last sale, I still wasn't sure my group was sold on Hellfrost for the long term, but it looks like we are in it for the long haul now.

We don't plan sales -- we just wake up feeling unusually generous every now and then. Very Happy Not that we're not unusually generous with every single release.
